After spending more than half a year on the sidelines due to injury, 27-year old Rafael Nadal is set to become world number one after reaching the finals of the China Open.

Nadal, who returned to the court in February this year, has won all 25 hard court matches, winning 64 matches and losing 3 in all matches this year. In the process, he has won 10 titles out 12 and has been a runner-up in the other 2.

The Spaniard had been assured of reclaiming the top spot if he reached the final in Beijing or if Djokovic, the current world number one, failed to defend his China Open title.

Nadal will become world number one on Monday when the seedlings are announced. He reached the final after 4th seed Thomas Berdych, his opponent in the semis, pulled out due to a back injury.

Speaking to reporters after the semis, Nadal had this to say: "What makes me happy is everything I did to be back where I am". He further added: "It is special to be back to the top position after more than half a year without playing tennis."

The results of the Finals in Beijing on Sunday between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will have no bearings on the seedlings to be announced on Monday. The final will also be the 13th final for Nadal this year.
